Kuwaiti National Law
What is this right?
Expatriate workers in Kuwait can sponsor their family members to join them under certain conditions:
- You must earn a minimum monthly salary of KWD 250 (or KWD 450 for some visa categories) to sponsor dependents.
- You can sponsor your spouse, children under 18, and parents (parents require additional conditions).
- Sponsored dependents receive a dependent residence visa (Article 22) that must be renewed with the sponsor's own residence permit.
- Sponsored wives can work if they obtain a separate work permit from a different employer or transfer to their own sponsorship.
- Sons over 18 and unmarried daughters over 21 must obtain their own residence permits or leave Kuwait.
When does it apply?
- You are an expatriate worker in Kuwait and want to bring your family to live with you.
- Your child is turning 18 and you need to understand their options to remain in Kuwait.
- Your spouse wants to work in Kuwait while on a dependent visa.
What should you do?
- Verify your salary meets the minimum required for family sponsorship.
- Apply at the Ministry of Interior (General Department of Residency Affairs) with your civil ID, salary certificate, tenancy contract, and marriage/birth certificates.
- Complete the medical examination for each family member upon arrival.
- Plan ahead for children approaching 18 — they will need to transfer to a work or study visa.
What should you NOT do?
- Do not bring family members on visit visas and let them overstay — this leads to fines and deportation.
- Do not let dependent visas expire — renew them along with your own residence permit.
- Do not sponsor people you are not related to as family members — fraudulent sponsorship is a criminal offence.
