Minimum Wage & Wage Protection
Written in plain language for general understanding. This is educational content, not legal advice. Based on UAE federal decrees, laws, and ministerial decisions.
What is this right?
The UAE does not have a single national minimum wage that applies to all workers. Instead, the government sets sector-specific and skill-level minimums through ministerial decisions. However, every employer must pay wages through the Wage Protection System (WPS).
- WPS: All private-sector employers must transfer salaries electronically through approved banks or exchange houses. Cash payments are not allowed.
- Payment deadline: Wages must be paid no later than 10 days after the end of the pay period.
- Currency: Wages must be paid in UAE dirhams (AED) unless the contract states otherwise.
- Deductions: Your employer cannot deduct more than 50% of your salary for debts or loans.
If your employer fails to pay through WPS or pays late, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) can suspend their ability to hire new workers.
When does it apply?
- You work in the private sector in the UAE under an employment contract.
- Your employer has registered with MOHRE and is required to use the WPS.
- This applies to all nationalities, including UAE nationals and expatriates.
What should you do?
- Check your pay slips — make sure your salary matches your contract and is deposited through the banking system.
- If your wages are late or unpaid, file a complaint with MOHRE through the MOHRE app, website, or by calling 600-590000.
- Keep copies of your employment contract, pay slips, and bank statements as evidence.
- If MOHRE mediation fails, your case can be referred to the Labour Court at no charge for claims under AED 100,000.
What should you NOT do?
- Do not accept cash-only payments — this bypasses the WPS and leaves you without proof of payment.
- Do not sign blank documents — some employers ask workers to sign receipts for amounts they did not receive.
- Do not wait too long — wage complaints should be filed within 1 year of the violation.
