Understanding the UAE's Legal System
The UAE is a federation of seven emirates with a civil-law system shaped by Egyptian, French, and Islamic traditions. Federal law covers most things you'll meet — Civil Code, Penal Code, and the Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law 33/2021). Workplace complaints go through MOHRE; unresolved cases go to the labour court. The kafala sponsorship system has been abolished in the private sector — you can change employers without your sponsor's permission.
Family law historically followed Sharia-based Personal Status Law, but Abu Dhabi and Dubai now offer civil family law for non-Muslim residents. Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah have their own court systems; the DIFC and ADGM free zones run separate English-language common-law courts. This guide flags emirate and free-zone differences where they matter.
