Understanding Oman's Legal System
Oman blends civil-law codes with Islamic Sharia. Codified statutes cover most things you'll meet — Civil Transactions Law, Commercial Law, Labour Law (Royal Decree 35/2003, as amended) — while family matters fall under the Personal Status Law. Workplace complaints go to the Ministry of Labour for mediation before they reach the courts. New protections cap passport confiscation and add wage-protection rules.
Civil and criminal cases run through three tiers (First Instance, Appeal, Supreme Court); an Administrative Court handles disputes with government agencies. Royal Decrees issued by the Sultan carry the force of law and are the primary route for major legislation.
