Understanding Saudi Arabia's Legal System
Saudi Arabia's legal system is rooted in Sharia (Hanbali jurisprudence) plus Royal Decrees that carry the force of law. Recent codification gives you statutes you can actually point to: the Personal Status Law (2022), Law of Evidence (2022), and Civil Transactions Law (2023). The Labour Law (Royal Decree M/51 of 2005, as amended) covers contracts, wages, hours, leave, and termination.
Workplace complaints go to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development; unresolved cases go to the labour court. The kafala system has been replaced for most private-sector workers — you can change employers under the new mobility rules. The Wage Protection System backs you on unpaid wages. The Board of Grievances handles disputes with government agencies.
