The next step is an appeal to an independent tribunal — and this is where a large share of refused PIP, Universal Credit, and disability-benefit decisions get overturned, especially when the claimant attends a hearing.
In England & Wales (and for DWP benefits across Great Britain), you appeal to the First-tier Tribunal (Social Security and Child Support) using form SSCS1, or online at gov.uk, within one month of the date on your Mandatory Reconsideration Notice — and you send a copy of that notice with the appeal. In Scotland, an Adult Disability Payment decision is appealed to the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Social Security Chamber) within 31 days of the redetermination. In Northern Ireland, you send a Notice of Appeal to the Department for Communities, which forwards it to The Appeals Service. Every route is free.
The deadlines are short and the tribunals are independent of the department that refused you. Ask for an oral hearing — claimants who attend do markedly better than those who leave it to be decided on the papers. Free, specialist welfare-rights advisers can even represent you.
