What is this right?

One missed credit-card payment in 2021 can cost you a home loan in 2026. That is the practical weight of the CIB record, and Pakistani banks treat it as gospel. Cleaning it up is slow, formal, and entirely worth it.

The Credit Information Bureau (eCIB) is the central registry of every formal-sector loan in the country. SBP began centralised credit-bureau reporting in 2006, and the private bureaux Tasdeeq and DataCheck were licensed under the Credit Bureaus Act 2015. Banks, MFIs, and microfinance banks report monthly. Any default of 60 or more days is recorded, and so is the settlement when it eventually comes. Both stay visible to lenders evaluating future credit.

Common CIB problems:

  • Defaults that have been settled but show as outstanding.
  • Loans of someone with the same name (CNIC mix-up).
  • Old written-off loans that were not reported as cleared.
  • Dispute-mode loans showing as default during pendency.

Correction procedure:

  1. Get your CIB report at SBP eCIB portal (or paid bank report). It's now free annually.
  2. If error: contact the reporting bank — they file correction with eCIB.
  3. If bank refuses: SBP Consumer Protection Department complaint.
  4. If still unresolved: Banking Mohtasib.

Once the loan is settled, the "default" flag becomes "settled." The entry doesn't disappear immediately, though most banks weight settled defaults less heavily after 3–5 years.

Private credit bureaus like Tasdeeq and DataCheck report similar information. Disputes follow the same chain: bureau → SBP → Banking Mohtasib.

When does it apply?

  • You've been denied a loan or credit card and want to know why.
  • You suspect your CIB record has errors.
  • You've settled an old default but it still shows as outstanding.

What to do to fix a CIB error

  • Get your CIB report from SBP eCIB or your bank. Annual report is free.
  • For errors, write to the reporting bank with documentary evidence (settlement receipts, payment proofs). Bank must file correction within 30 days.
  • If unresolved: SBP BC&CPD complaint at sbp.org.pk/bccpd.
  • For Banking Mohtasib: file after 45 days of bank inaction. Mohtasib can order correction within 30 days of decision.
  • Keep all documents: settlement letters, paid receipts, NOC from bank.

What should you NOT do?

  • Don't accept "we'll fix it next month" assurances. Get written timeline and follow up.
  • Don't pay touts claiming to clean credit history — most are scams. Use the formal complaint chain.
  • Don't apply for multiple loans while disputing — repeated rejections create negative pattern.
