What is this right?

MediShield Life is Singapore's compulsory national health insurance scheme:

  • Universal coverage: All Singapore citizens and PRs are automatically enrolled — no opt-out.
  • Lifetime protection: Coverage from birth, with no lifetime claim limit.
  • What it covers: Large hospitalisation bills and costly outpatient treatments (e.g., chemotherapy, dialysis). Covers B2/C ward in public hospitals.
  • Co-payment: You pay a deductible ($1,500–$3,000 depending on age) and co-insurance (3%–10% of the remaining bill). The rest is covered by MediShield Life.
  • Premiums: Payable from MediSave. Premiums increase with age but are subsidised by the government (up to 50% for lower-income groups).
  • Pre-existing conditions: Covered — MediShield Life does not exclude pre-existing conditions (unlike private insurance).

When does it apply?

  • You are a Singapore citizen or PR — you are automatically covered.
  • Claims arise when you are hospitalised or receive covered outpatient treatments at approved institutions.

What to Do If Your MediShield Life Claim Has Been Partially Denied or You Cannot Afford the Co-Payment in Singapore

  • Check your MediShield Life status on the CPF website — ensure your premiums are up to date.
  • When admitted to hospital, MediShield Life claims are processed automatically through the hospital.
  • For higher coverage (private hospitals, single rooms), consider purchasing an Integrated Shield Plan (IP) from a private insurer — these top up MediShield Life.
  • If you have difficulty paying premiums, apply for MediSave and premium subsidies from the government.

What should you NOT do?

  • Don't let premiums go unpaid — while you cannot be "kicked off" MediShield Life, unpaid premiums accrue with interest and must be settled before claims can be made.
  • Don't assume MediShield Life covers everything — it is designed for B2/C ward bills. Upgrading to a single room or private hospital requires an Integrated Shield Plan.
  • Don't confuse MediShield Life with private health insurance — it is the base layer of coverage; private plans sit on top.
