Healthcare Rights
Patient rights under Danish law — Sundhedsloven, free public healthcare, informed consent, patient complaints, access to medical records, and mental health protections.
Covered in this guide:
Healthcare in Denmark is universal and tax-funded under the Health Act (Sundhedsloven), run by the five regions. Your health insurance card (sundhedskort) covers GP visits, hospital treatment, specialist referrals, and emergencies at no out-of-pocket cost. You have rights to informed consent, treatment refusal, and access to your records. If the public system can't treat you within 30 days, you can choose private or another region at public cost. Injuries from treatment are covered by no-fault Patient Insurance (Patienterstatningen). Mental health follows the Psychiatric Act (Psykiatriloven).
