What is this right?
Jobseeker Support is the main working-age benefit for people who are looking for work, or who can't work for now because of a health condition or disability. It's paid by Work and Income under the Social Security Act 2018 and comes with obligations (such as preparing for and seeking work) that you must meet to keep receiving it.
From 1 April 2026, the main net (after-tax) rates are: single 25+ $372.55/week, single 20–24 $324.50, single 18–19 living at home $276.46, and a couple $633.94 total. Earnings are allowed up to $160 a week (gross), after which the payment abates by 70 cents per extra dollar. You may also qualify for extra help like the Accommodation Supplement. (Rates current at 1 April 2026 — re-verify before relying on them.)
When does it apply?
- You're out of work and looking for a job.
- You can't work temporarily due to a health condition or injury (with a medical certificate).
- You're working reduced hours and on a low income.

- Have your IRD number, ID and income details ready.

- Don't assume you don't qualify while working part-time — abatement may still leave a payment.
About Benefits & Welfare in New Zealand
New Zealand's income-support system is run by Work and Income (part of the Ministry of Social Development, MSD) under the Social Security Act 2018. The main payments are Jobseeker Support, Sole Parent Support, the Supported Living Payment, and the Accommodation Supplement for housing costs. Rates are adjusted every 1 April. If MSD makes a decision you disagree with, you can ask for a review (Benefits Review Committee) and then appeal to the independent Social Security Appeal Authority.
