What is this right?

International students can study in Bahrain on a student residence visa sponsored by their educational institution:

  • Student Visa: Issued for 1 year, renewable annually while enrolled. Your university acts as your sponsor. Processed through the NPRA.
  • Key institutions: University of Bahrain, Arabian Gulf University, Royal University for Women, Bahrain Polytechnic, and several private universities including the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain).
  • Part-time work: Students may work part-time with a separate work authorization. The Flexi Permit is also available to students — some students use it to work alongside their studies.
  • Post-graduation: After completing studies, graduates can apply for the Flexi Permit (BHD 499/year) to work independently while seeking employer sponsorship, or secure a standard work permit through an employer.

Fees: Student visa: BHD 50-100 (often handled by the university). CPR: BHD 20. Medical test: BHD 15-30. Tuition: varies by institution — BHD 2,000-10,000+/year.

Processing time: 1-3 weeks after university acceptance.

When does it apply?

  • You have been accepted to a Bahrain-based university or college.
  • You are a current student wanting to work part-time or explore post-graduation options.

What to Do If You Are an International Student in Bahrain and Want to Work Part-Time or Plan Post-Graduation Residency

  • Let your university handle the visa process — most institutions have a student services office managing visa applications.
  • Consider the Flexi Permit for part-time work during studies — it allows you to work for any employer.
  • Plan your post-graduation pathway — the Flexi Permit offers a unique bridge between study and employment not available in most Gulf countries.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not work without authorization — get either a work permit or Flexi Permit before taking any employment.
  • Do not let your student visa lapse — coordinate with your university for timely renewal.
  • Do not overstay after completing studies — transition to a Flexi Permit or work visa, or depart before your visa expires.
