What is this right?

The Flexi Permit allows foreign nationals to sponsor themselves in Bahrain and work for any employer on a freelance or part-time basis:

  • Self-sponsorship: Unlike traditional work permits, the Flexi Permit is not tied to a single employer. You sponsor yourself and can work for multiple employers.
  • Duration: Issued for 1 or 2 years, renewable through the LMRA.
  • Eligibility: Available to foreign nationals who are legally present in Bahrain and meet the LMRA criteria. Certain nationalities and conditions may have additional requirements.
  • Fee: The permit holder pays a monthly fee to the LMRA. The fee must be paid on time to keep the permit valid.
  • Health insurance: Flexi Permit holders must have valid health insurance coverage.

When does it apply?

  • You want to work in Bahrain without being tied to one employer.
  • You are a freelancer or gig worker looking for a legal way to work in Bahrain.
  • Your employment visa has expired or been cancelled and you need a legal alternative while searching for a new sponsor.

What should you do?

  • Apply for the Flexi Permit through the LMRA online portal or at a service centre.
  • Ensure you have a valid passport and are legally present in Bahrain at the time of application.
  • Pay the monthly fees on time — missing payments will invalidate your permit.
  • Obtain health insurance that meets the LMRA requirements.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not let fees lapse — an unpaid Flexi Permit becomes invalid and you could be considered overstaying.
  • Do not use the Flexi Permit to work in restricted occupations — some roles are reserved for Bahraini nationals.
  • Do not confuse Flexi Permit with Golden Residency — the Flexi Permit is a shorter-term work solution, not a long-term residency visa.
