Immigration Pathways

Work permits, Flexi Permit, Golden Residency, family sponsorship, student visas, citizenship, and practical immigration guidance for Bahrain.

Bahrain is home to over 800,000 foreign workers who make up roughly half of the total population. Immigration is governed by Law No. 51 of 2006 regarding the Residence of Foreigners, administered by the Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs (NPRA) department under the Ministry of Interior. Bahrain was one of the first Gulf states to reform its sponsorship system, introducing the Flexi Permit in 2017 — a self-sponsored work visa that allows foreign nationals to work without a traditional employer sponsor.

In 2022, Bahrain launched the Golden Residency Visa, a 10-year renewable residency for investors, retirees, and high-value talent. The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) manages work permits, employer mobility, and the Flexi Permit system. All immigration and labour transactions can be accessed through the LMRA portal (lmra.gov.bh), the eVisa platform (evisa.gov.bh), and the Bahrain.bh national portal.

Bahrain also has a unique pathway to permanent residency and even citizenship for long-term residents (25+ years, or 15 for Arab nationals), though approvals remain rare. This section covers the practical side of Bahrain immigration: visa types, fees, processing times, and common mistakes.
