Bahraini National Law

What is this right?

Bahrain provides several protections for foreign workers, with some of the more progressive labour laws in the Gulf region:

  • Wage Protection System (WPS): All employers must pay wages through the electronic WPS. The LMRA monitors compliance and penalises employers who fail to pay on time.
  • Job mobility: Workers can transfer to a new employer through the LMRA portal after 1 year of service or when their contract expires. The Flexi Permit provides additional mobility — holders can work for any employer.
  • Health insurance: Employers are required to provide health insurance or facilitate access to healthcare. Bahrain operates government health centres accessible to all residents for a nominal fee.
  • End-of-service benefits: Workers completing 1+ year of service receive end-of-service indemnity — half a month's salary per year for the first 3 years, one month per year after that (Labour Law No. 36 of 2012).
  • Heat work ban: Outdoor work is prohibited from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM from July 1 to August 31. Employers violating this face fines.
  • Passport retention is illegal: Employers cannot confiscate workers' passports. Report violations to the LMRA.
  • Labour disputes: The Ministry of Labour provides free mediation. Unresolved cases go to Labour Courts, where workers are exempt from court fees for small claims.
  • Social insurance: Foreign workers are not covered by Bahrain's social insurance system (SIO), but are entitled to end-of-service indemnity.

When does it apply?

  • You are a foreign worker in Bahrain — any sector.
  • Your employer has failed to pay wages, withheld your passport, or denied healthcare.
  • You want to file a labour complaint or change employers.

What to Do If Your Employer in Bahrain Has Unpaid Wages, Confiscated Your Passport, or Denied Healthcare

  • Report unpaid wages to the LMRA or Ministry of Labour.
  • Report passport confiscation to the LMRA immediately.
  • File labour disputes at the Ministry of Labour — mediation is free.
  • Use the LMRA portal (lmra.gov.bh) to manage your work permit status and employer transfers.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not work without a valid permit — even on the Flexi Permit, it must be current and valid.
  • Do not waive your end-of-service rights — these are legal entitlements under the Labour Law.
  • Do not delay filing complaints about unpaid wages — act promptly to protect your rights.
