What is this right?

Foreign residents in Bahrain frequently make avoidable mistakes that lead to fines, deportation, or loss of legal status:

  • Working on a tourist visa: Working without a valid work permit or Flexi Permit is illegal. Penalties include fines, detention, and deportation with a re-entry ban.
  • Letting the Flexi Permit expire: Flexi Permit holders must renew before expiry. Late renewal fines are BHD 10/day. If you let it lapse, you become an illegal resident.
  • Overstaying any visa: Overstay fines are BHD 10/day. Prolonged overstay leads to deportation and a re-entry ban.
  • Not carrying your CPR: You are required to carry your CPR (residence card) at all times. Failure to produce it when requested by police can lead to detention.
  • Surrendering your passport: Despite being illegal, some employers still take passports. Never hand it over voluntarily — report confiscation to LMRA immediately.
  • Absconding from employment: Leaving your employer without following proper transfer procedures through LMRA can result in an absconding report, making it difficult to work for any employer in Bahrain.
  • Working for multiple employers without a Flexi Permit: Standard work permit holders can only work for their sponsoring employer. Working for others requires either a proper transfer or a Flexi Permit.
  • Not understanding Flexi Permit limitations: Flexi Permit holders are responsible for their own health insurance, CPR renewal, and visa management — there is no employer handling these for you.

When does it apply?

  • You are new to Bahrain and navigating the immigration system.
  • You are on a Flexi Permit and managing your own visa independently.
  • You are changing jobs, ending employment, or leaving Bahrain.

What to Do If You Have Made a Common Immigration Mistake Like Letting Your Flexi Permit Lapse or Working Without a Permit in Bahrain

  • Set calendar reminders for CPR, work permit, and Flexi Permit renewal dates.
  • Use the LMRA portal (lmra.gov.bh) for all work permit and Flexi Permit transactions.
  • Keep copies of all documents — employment contract, CPR, passport, and work permit.
  • Follow proper procedures when changing employers — use the LMRA transfer system.
  • Know key contacts: LMRA hotline, 999 (Police), and your embassy's emergency number.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not work on a tourist visa — get a proper work permit or Flexi Permit first.
  • Do not ignore renewal deadlines — BHD 10/day fines add up quickly.
  • Do not leave Bahrain with outstanding obligations — debts can trigger a travel ban.
  • Do not use unofficial agents for immigration matters — use only LMRA, NPRA, and eVisa portals.
