Bahraini National Law

What is this right?

Bahrain citizenship is very rare for foreigners but technically more accessible than in some Gulf states — the law provides a defined (if difficult) pathway:

  • By birth (patrilineal): A child born to a Bahraini father is automatically a citizen. Children of Bahraini mothers and foreign fathers are not automatically citizens, but recent amendments allow them to apply for citizenship.
  • By marriage: A foreign woman married to a Bahraini man may apply for citizenship after 5 years of marriage (with conditions). Foreign husbands of Bahraini women cannot obtain citizenship through marriage, though this is a subject of ongoing advocacy.
  • Naturalization (general): A foreigner may apply after 25 years of continuous lawful residence (15 years for Arab nationals). Additional requirements: Arabic language proficiency, property ownership in Bahrain, good conduct, and no criminal record. Approval is by Royal Decree and is not guaranteed.
  • Naturalization (special): Individuals who have rendered distinguished services to Bahrain may be naturalized by Royal Decree without meeting the standard residence requirement.
  • Dual nationality: Bahrain generally does not recognize dual nationality. Naturalized citizens are typically required to renounce their original nationality.

Realistic expectation: While Bahrain has one of the more defined naturalization frameworks in the Gulf, approvals are still rare and entirely discretionary. The Golden Residency (10-year) is the practical long-term alternative for most.

When does it apply?

  • You are the child of a Bahraini father (automatic citizenship).
  • You are a foreign woman married to a Bahraini man for 5+ years.
  • You have 25+ years of continuous residence (15 for Arab nationals) and meet all requirements.

What to Do If You Want to Apply for Bahraini Citizenship Through Marriage or Long-Term Residency

  • For children of Bahraini fathers: Citizenship is automatic — ensure birth registration with the civil registry.
  • For marriage-based applications: Apply through the Ministry of Interior after 5 years of marriage with supporting documents.
  • For naturalization: Gather documentation proving continuous residence, Arabic proficiency, property ownership, and clean criminal record. Apply through the Ministry of Interior.
  • Consider Golden Residency as a practical stepping stone — 10-year residency with many benefits of permanent status.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not expect citizenship through residence alone — meeting the time requirement does not guarantee approval.
  • Do not pay anyone claiming to arrange citizenship — naturalization is by Royal Decree and cannot be purchased.
  • Do not assume dual nationality is permitted — you may need to renounce your original nationality.
