What is this right?

Bahrain's Golden Residency Visa is a long-term residency option for qualified individuals who wish to live and work in Bahrain without employer sponsorship:

  • Eligibility: Available to retirees, investors, high-income professionals, entrepreneurs, and individuals with special talents (artists, athletes, researchers) who meet specific financial and professional criteria.
  • Duration: Granted for 10 years and is renewable.
  • Self-sponsorship: Golden Residency holders do not need an employer sponsor — they can live in Bahrain independently and work freely.
  • Family: Holders can sponsor their spouse and children for residency.
  • Property: Golden Residency holders have the right to own property in Bahrain in designated freehold areas.

When does it apply?

  • You are a retiree, investor, or professional interested in long-term residency in Bahrain.
  • You want to live and work in Bahrain without being tied to an employer sponsor.
  • You are already in Bahrain on another visa and want to upgrade to Golden Residency.

What should you do?

  • Check the eligibility criteria on the LMRA website for your specific category (retiree, investor, talent, etc.).
  • Prepare the required documents: proof of income or investment, passport, medical certificate, and police clearance.
  • Submit your application through the LMRA online portal or at an LMRA service centre.
  • Once approved, register your dependents for family residency permits if applicable.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not overstay your current visa while waiting for Golden Residency processing — maintain valid status at all times.
  • Do not provide false financial documents — applications are verified and fraud leads to rejection and potential legal action.
  • Do not assume Golden Residency grants citizenship — it is a long-term visa, not a path to Bahraini nationality.

You came here to know your rights — help someone else know theirs.
