What is this right?
Overstaying your visa in Kuwait is treated seriously — fines accumulate daily and prolonged overstay leads to detention and deportation:
- A fine of KWD 2 per day is charged for each day you overstay your visa or residence permit — this adds up to KWD 60/month or KWD 730/year.
- Prolonged overstay results in detention at the deportation facility, deportation, and a re-entry ban of up to 5 years.
- If you cannot pay the accumulated fines, you may be detained until your embassy or a sponsor pays on your behalf.
- Kuwait periodically announces amnesty periods allowing overstayers to leave without fines or re-entry bans — these are typically announced with short notice and last only a few weeks.
- Employers who fail to renew their workers' permits can be fined and banned from hiring new workers — if your employer caused the overstay, PAM can hold them responsible for the fines.
When does it apply?
- Your visit visa or residence permit has expired and you are still in Kuwait.
- Your employer failed to renew your permit and you are now in illegal status through no fault of your own.
- You want to leave Kuwait but cannot afford the accumulated fines.
What to Do If You Have Overstayed Your Visa in Kuwait
- Act immediately — every day you wait adds KWD 2 to your fines and increases the risk of detention.
- Contact your embassy — they can sometimes negotiate with MOI, arrange emergency travel documents, or help pay fines.
- If an amnesty is announced, go to the designated processing centre immediately — do not wait until the last day.
- If your employer caused the overstay by not renewing your permit, file a complaint with PAM — the employer should be held responsible for the fines.
- Check the MOI online portal regularly for amnesty announcements and your current fine status.
What should you NOT do?
- Do not ignore the overstay — it does not resolve itself and fines compound daily at KWD 2.
- Do not try to leave through unofficial channels — this results in criminal charges on top of the immigration penalties.
- Do not destroy your identification documents — this makes your situation much worse and can add criminal charges.
