Qatari National Law

What is this right?

Qatar's Family Law sets out clear obligations for financial support:

  • The father is responsible for financially supporting his children, including housing, food, education, clothing, and healthcare.
  • Child support continues until the daughter marries or the son becomes self-sufficient (or completes education).
  • Spousal maintenance (nafaqa) during marriage includes housing, food, clothing, and medical care. During the iddah period after divorce, the husband must continue full maintenance.
  • A divorced wife may receive mut'a (consolation payment) — a lump sum decided by the court based on the marriage length, circumstances of divorce, and the husband's financial capacity.
  • The court determines child support amounts based on the father's actual income and the child's reasonable needs — not on a fixed formula.

When does it apply?

  • You need child support from the other parent after separation or divorce.
  • Your former spouse is not paying court-ordered maintenance.
  • You need to modify support amounts due to changed circumstances (job loss, increased expenses).

What to Do If the Father Is Not Paying Child Support in Qatar

  • File a maintenance claim with the Sharia Court and provide evidence of the children's needs and the father's income.
  • If the father refuses to pay, request court enforcement — the court can order salary deductions directly from the employer.
  • To modify the amount, file a modification request with evidence of changed circumstances.
  • Keep detailed records of all expenses related to the children (school fees, medical bills, clothing receipts) to support your claim.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not withhold visitation as leverage for maintenance payments. The court treats these as separate legal issues and may penalize you.
  • Do not hide income to reduce support obligations. The court can investigate and impose penalties for concealment.
  • Do not rely on informal arrangements. Get a court order — without one, enforcement is impossible if payments stop.
