What is this right?

Working in Qatar requires a valid employment visa and Qatar ID:

  • Your employer must obtain a work visa on your behalf before you arrive or within the authorized period.
  • Upon arrival, you receive a Qatar ID (QID), which is your primary identification document for all official purposes.
  • The QID must be renewed before it expires. Your employer is responsible for initiating the renewal.
  • Working without a valid visa or QID is illegal and can result in fines, detention, and deportation.
  • You have the right to hold your own QID and passport. Your employer cannot confiscate them.

When does it apply?

  • You are coming to Qatar for employment and need a work visa.
  • Your QID is expiring and needs renewal.
  • Your employer has not provided you with a valid work visa or QID.

What should you do?

  • Ensure your employer processes your visa before you start working.
  • Keep your QID with you at all times — it is required for banking, housing, and government services.
  • If your employer delays visa or QID processing, report it to the Ministry of Interior.
  • Track your QID expiry date and remind your employer to renew it in advance.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not work without a valid visa. This puts you at risk of penalties and deportation.
  • Do not hand over your passport or QID to your employer. You have the right to keep your documents.
  • Do not overstay your visa. Overstaying leads to fines and potential travel bans.
