What is this right?
Deportation from the UAE can result from criminal convictions, visa violations, or threats to public order. You have certain rights during this process:
- Grounds for deportation: Common reasons include criminal convictions, visa overstay, working without a permit, moral turpitude offences, and being declared a threat to public security or the economy.
- Judicial deportation: A court can order deportation as part of a criminal sentence. This usually comes with an entry ban.
- Administrative deportation: Immigration authorities can issue a deportation order for visa violations without a court hearing.
- Right to legal counsel: You have the right to hire a lawyer and be represented during any court proceedings that may lead to deportation.
- Entry bans: Deportation may come with a temporary or permanent entry ban. The ban period depends on the reason for deportation.
When does it apply?
- You have been convicted of a crime in the UAE.
- You have seriously violated your visa conditions.
- Immigration authorities have issued a deportation order against you.
What should you do?
- Hire a lawyer immediately if you face deportation — legal representation is critical.
- Contact your embassy or consulate — they can provide consular assistance, help communicate with your family, and in some cases, intervene on your behalf.
- If you believe the deportation is unjust, file an appeal through the court system — you have the right to challenge the order.
- Collect your personal belongings and settle financial matters before departure — once deported, returning to the UAE may be difficult or impossible.
What should you NOT do?
- Do not resist or evade the deportation process — this is a criminal offence that carries additional penalties.
- Do not sign documents you do not understand — request a translator if needed.
- Do not attempt to re-enter the UAE on a different passport if you have an entry ban — biometric systems will detect you, and the consequences are severe.
