Kuwaiti National Law

What is this right?

Kuwait's nationality law is one of the most restrictive in the world:

  • Nationality is passed through the father only — children of a Kuwaiti mother and non-Kuwaiti father do not automatically receive citizenship.
  • A foreign woman who marries a Kuwaiti man may apply for citizenship after 15 years of marriage (or 5 years if she has children), at the discretion of the authorities.
  • A Kuwaiti woman who marries a non-Kuwaiti man does not lose her citizenship, but cannot pass it to her husband or children.
  • Naturalisation is possible after 20 years of continuous legal residence, but is rarely granted and subject to annual caps.
  • The Bidoon (stateless) population faces significant legal barriers to citizenship despite long-term residence in Kuwait.
  • Dual nationality is not permitted — acquiring a foreign citizenship can result in losing Kuwaiti nationality.

When does it apply?

  • You are the child of a Kuwaiti mother and non-Kuwaiti father and want to understand your citizenship options.
  • You are a foreign spouse of a Kuwaiti and want to apply for citizenship.
  • You are a long-term resident considering naturalisation.

What should you do?

  • Consult an immigration lawyer — citizenship applications are complex and discretionary.
  • If eligible, submit your application through the Central Agency for Illegal Residents' Affairs (for Bidoon) or the Ministry of Interior (for others).
  • Gather all required documents — birth certificates, marriage certificates, proof of residence, and good-conduct certificates.
  • Be prepared for a long waiting period — citizenship decisions can take years.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not acquire foreign citizenship without understanding that you may lose Kuwaiti nationality.
  • Do not submit false documents — fraud in citizenship applications is a criminal offence.
  • Do not assume marriage grants automatic citizenship — it requires a separate application process after many years.

You came here to know your rights — help someone else know theirs.
