Omani National Law

What is this right?

Oman law protects consumers from dishonest business practices:

  • False advertising: It is illegal to make false or misleading claims about a product's quality, ingredients, origin, price, or effectiveness.
  • Hidden fees: The full price of a product or service must be disclosed upfront. Hidden charges and surprise fees are prohibited.
  • Counterfeit goods: Selling fake or counterfeit products disguised as genuine brands is a criminal offence.
  • Bait and switch: Advertising a product at a low price to lure customers, then pushing a more expensive alternative, is prohibited.
  • Penalties: Businesses engaging in deceptive practices face fines, licence revocation, and criminal prosecution.

When does it apply?

  • You were sold a product based on false or exaggerated claims.
  • You were charged hidden fees that were not disclosed before purchase.
  • You suspect a product is counterfeit or not what was advertised.

What should you do?

  • Document the deceptive practice — save advertisements, receipts, packaging, and any communication with the seller.
  • File a complaint with the PACP (1222) — they investigate deceptive practices.
  • For counterfeit goods, you can also report to the Royal Oman Police economic crime division.
  • Request a full refund for products sold through deception.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not delete digital evidence — screenshots of false ads, messages, and online listings are valuable proof.
  • Do not accept partial compensation without understanding your full rights — you may be entitled to a complete refund.
  • Do not buy from unregistered or unlicensed sellers — you have less legal recourse.

You came here to know your rights — help someone else know theirs.
