Qatari National Law

What is this right?

Workers in Qatar have specific health protections in the workplace, including some of the most advanced heat stress protections in the Gulf:

  • Employers must provide a safe and healthy working environment that meets Ministry of Labour standards.
  • Workers exposed to hazardous materials must receive regular medical examinations at the employer's expense.
  • Pre-employment medical screening is required for all workers to ensure fitness for the job.
  • Employers must maintain first aid equipment and trained personnel at the workplace.
  • Workers who suffer occupational diseases are entitled to treatment at HMC and compensation under the Labour Law.
  • The heat stress protections (Ministerial Decision No. 17 of 2021) use a WBGT-based approach that can halt outdoor work at any hour when heat conditions become dangerous — not just a fixed midday ban.

When does it apply?

  • You work in conditions that may affect your health (heat, chemicals, dust, noise).
  • Your employer does not provide medical examinations or safety equipment.
  • You develop an illness that you believe is caused by your work.

What to Do If You Are Injured or Made Ill at Work in Qatar

  • Request regular medical checkups if you work in hazardous conditions. Your employer must pay for them.
  • Report unsafe health conditions to the Ministry of Labour at 16008.
  • If you develop a work-related illness, see a doctor at HMC or PHCC and inform your employer immediately.
  • File for compensation through the Labour Dispute Resolution Committee if your employer does not cover treatment costs.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not ignore health symptoms that may be related to your work. Early treatment at HMC is important.
  • Do not refuse medical examinations required by your employer. They protect your health and legal rights.
  • Do not work in hazardous conditions without proper protective equipment. You have the right to refuse dangerous work.
