What is this right?

International students can study in Qatar on a student residence visa, sponsored by their educational institution:

  • Student Visa: Issued for 1 year, renewable annually while enrolled. Your university or college acts as your sponsor. Applications are processed through MOI.
  • Education City institutions: Qatar Foundation's Education City hosts branch campuses of major universities including Georgetown, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, Texas A&M, Virginia Commonwealth, Weill Cornell, and HEC Paris. These are among the most common paths for international students.
  • Qatar University: The national university accepts international students and sponsors their visas.
  • Qatar Foundation scholarships: Many Education City students receive full scholarships covering tuition, housing, and living expenses — the university handles all visa arrangements.
  • Part-time work: Student visa holders may work part-time with a separate work permit from MOL and a no-objection letter from their institution. This is less common than in Western countries.
  • Post-graduation: After completing studies, students must secure employment sponsorship or leave Qatar. There is no automatic post-study work visa. However, graduates from Education City and Qatar University often find employers willing to sponsor them.

Fees: Student visa: QAR 200-500 (often waived for scholarship students). QID: QAR 200. Medical test: QAR 200-400. Tuition: varies — scholarship students pay nothing; self-funded tuition can range from QAR 50,000-200,000+/year depending on institution.

Processing time: 2-4 weeks after university acceptance letter is issued.

  • You have received a Qatar Foundation scholarship or university-funded position.
  • You are a current student exploring part-time work or post-graduation options.

What to Do If You Want to Study in Qatar on a Student Visa

  • Let your university handle the visa process — most institutions have a student services office that manages visa applications.
  • Complete medical testing and biometric registration for QID issuance after arrival.
  • Download Metrash2 to track your visa and QID status.
  • Plan your post-graduation pathway — begin networking and job searching before your student visa expires.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not work without a separate work permit — working on a student visa alone is illegal.
  • Do not let your QID expire — coordinate with your university for timely renewal.
  • Do not overstay after completing your studies — arrange departure or employer sponsorship before your status ends.
