What is this right?

Foreign workers in Kuwait can sponsor immediate family members for dependent visas (Article 22 family residence), subject to income and profession requirements:

  • Eligible dependents: Spouse, sons (under 18, or under 24 if studying), unmarried daughters, and parents (limited).
  • Income requirement: Minimum salary of KWD 450/month (approximately USD 1,465) to sponsor dependents. Higher-salary workers and certain professions (doctors, engineers, teachers) have easier access.
  • Profession restrictions: Workers in certain low-skilled professions may not be eligible to sponsor dependents regardless of salary.
  • Women sponsoring families: Women in Kuwait can sponsor their children. Recent changes have also allowed women in certain professions to sponsor their husband, though this remains more restrictive than sponsorship by men.
  • Domestic workers: Families meeting income thresholds can sponsor domestic workers. Kuwait has one of the highest ratios of domestic workers per household in the world.

Fees: Dependent visa: KWD 10-50 per person. Civil ID: KWD 5/person. Medical test: KWD 5-20/person. Health insurance or DHAMAN registration: varies.

Processing time: Family visa approval: 2-4 weeks through MOI.

Required documents: Sponsor's Civil ID and passport, employment certificate showing salary, marriage certificate (attested by Kuwait embassy and MOFA), birth certificates (attested), tenancy agreement.

When does it apply?

  • You hold a valid Kuwait residence visa and earn at least KWD 450/month.
  • You are in an eligible profession for family sponsorship.
  • You want to bring your spouse and children to live with you in Kuwait.

What to Do If Your Kuwait Family Sponsorship Application Is Rejected

  • Attest all foreign documents — marriage and birth certificates must be attested by the Kuwait embassy in the issuing country, then legalised by Kuwait MOFA.
  • Apply through the MOI portal (moi.gov.kw) or visit a MOI service centre for family visa applications.
  • Register each dependent for a Civil ID through PACI after arrival.
  • Enroll dependents in the health system — either through DHAMAN (government health insurance for expats) or private insurance.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not bring family on visit visas and overstay — apply for proper dependent visas.
  • Do not submit unattested documents — applications will be rejected.
  • Do not assume all professions can sponsor — verify your eligibility based on your profession code with PAM.
