What is this right?

International students can study in Kuwait on a student residence visa, though options are more limited compared to other Gulf states:

  • Student Visa: Issued for 1 year, renewable while enrolled. Your educational institution acts as your sponsor. Processed through MOI.
  • Key institutions: Kuwait University (the public university, primarily for GCC nationals), American University of Kuwait, Gulf University for Science and Technology, Australian College of Kuwait, and American University of the Middle East.
  • Limited international enrollment: Kuwait University primarily admits Kuwaiti and GCC nationals. International students from outside the GCC are more commonly admitted to private universities.
  • Part-time work: Students on student visas generally cannot work. There is no formal part-time work permit for students. Some students on dependent visas (Article 22) may be able to obtain an Article 17 work permit.
  • Post-graduation: After completing studies, you must secure employer sponsorship or leave Kuwait. There is no post-study work visa. The transition from student visa to work visa requires finding an employer willing to sponsor you through PAM.

Fees: Student visa: KWD 10-50. Civil ID: KWD 5. Medical test: KWD 5-20. Tuition: varies widely — KWD 2,000-8,000+/year at private universities.

Processing time: 2-4 weeks after university acceptance.

When does it apply?

  • You have been accepted to a Kuwait-based university.
  • You are a dependent (on a family visa) and want to study in Kuwait.
  • You are a current student exploring post-graduation employment options.

What to Do If Your Student Visa in Kuwait Is Expiring or Was Not Renewed

  • Let your university handle the visa process — the institution's administration office typically manages visa applications.
  • Complete medical testing after arrival for Civil ID issuance.
  • Plan your post-graduation pathway early — begin job searching before your student status ends, as there is no buffer period.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not work on a student visa — unauthorized employment can result in deportation.
  • Do not let your student visa lapse — renew in coordination with your university.
  • Do not overstay after completing studies — secure employer sponsorship or depart before your visa expires.
