What is this right?

International students can study in Oman on a student residence visa sponsored by their educational institution:

  • Student Visa: Issued for 1 year, renewable annually while enrolled. Your university or college acts as your sponsor. Processed through the ROP.
  • Key institutions: Sultan Qaboos University (the national university), German University of Technology in Oman (GUTech), University of Nizwa, Dhofar University, and several private colleges.
  • Sultan Qaboos University: Primarily enrolls Omani students, but some programs accept international students, particularly at the graduate level.
  • Part-time work: Student visa holders generally cannot work outside of university-approved internships or research. There is no general part-time work permit for students.
  • Post-graduation: After completing studies, you must secure employer sponsorship or leave Oman. There is no automatic post-study work visa. Omanisation rules mean many jobs are reserved for Omanis, making the transition from study to work more challenging.

Fees: Student visa: OMR 20-50. Residence card: OMR 20. Medical test: OMR 20-50. Tuition: varies — OMR 1,500-6,000+/year at private institutions.

Processing time: 2-4 weeks after university acceptance.

When does it apply?

  • You have been accepted to an Oman-based university or college.
  • You are a current student wanting to understand your visa limitations.
  • You are a recent graduate exploring post-study options in Oman.

What to Do If You Have Graduated in Oman and Want to Stay and Find Work

  • Let your university handle the visa process — most institutions manage visa applications through their student services office.
  • Complete medical testing after arrival for residence card issuance.
  • Plan your post-graduation pathway — Omanisation means many positions are reserved for nationals, so start exploring options early.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not work on a student visa — unauthorized employment is illegal.
  • Do not let your student visa lapse — coordinate with your university for timely renewal.
  • Do not overstay after completing studies — secure employer sponsorship or depart before your visa expires.
