UAE Federal Law

What is this right?

UAE citizenship is extremely restricted and is not available through a standard application process. There is no pathway where meeting specific criteria guarantees citizenship:

  • By birth: Citizenship is passed through the father. A child born to a UAE national father is automatically a citizen. Children of Emirati mothers and foreign fathers are not automatically citizens, but may apply after turning 18 (or 6 if the father is unknown or stateless).
  • By marriage: A foreign woman married to a UAE national may apply for citizenship after 7 years of marriage with conditions (marriage must be ongoing, she must not hold another nationality at time of granting). Foreign husbands of Emirati women have no pathway to citizenship through marriage.
  • Naturalization (2021 decree): The UAE announced a limited naturalization pathway for exceptional individuals — investors, scientists, doctors, engineers, artists, and intellectuals. Candidates are nominated by UAE government entities; you cannot apply directly. Nominees must demonstrate outstanding contributions to the UAE.
  • Long-term residence: Under the older law, Arabs who have resided in the UAE for 7 years (or non-Arabs for 30 years) could theoretically apply, but approvals are exceedingly rare and entirely discretionary.
  • Dual nationality: The UAE does not recognize dual nationality. Naturalized citizens may be required to renounce their original nationality.

Realistic expectation: For the vast majority of expatriates, UAE citizenship is not a realistic goal. The Golden Visa (10-year renewable residency) is the practical long-term alternative. Citizenship remains a sovereign discretionary decision by the UAE government.

When does it apply?

  • You are a child of a UAE national father (automatic citizenship).
  • You are the child of a UAE national mother and foreign father and have turned 18.
  • You are a foreign woman married to a UAE national for 7+ years.
  • You have been nominated by a UAE government entity for exceptional talent naturalization.

What to Do If You Think You May Be Eligible for UAE Citizenship

  • For children of Emirati mothers: Apply through ICP after turning 18, with your mother's family book (Khulasat Al Qaid) and supporting documents.
  • For marriage-based applications: Apply through ICP after 7 years of continuous marriage, with your marriage contract, husband's family book, and proof of ongoing residence.
  • For exceptional talent: You cannot apply directly. Build a strong public profile in your field — nominations come from government entities, royal courts, or the Cabinet.
  • Consider the Golden Visa as a practical long-term alternative — it provides 10-year renewable residency with most benefits of permanent status.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not expect citizenship through long residence alone — even decades of residence does not create an entitlement to citizenship.
  • Do not pay anyone who claims they can arrange citizenship — there are scams targeting expatriates with false promises of UAE nationality.
  • Do not assume dual nationality is allowed — if granted citizenship, you may be required to renounce your original nationality.
