Qatari National Law
What is this right?
Qatar is expanding mental health protections and services:
- Mental health treatment should be provided with the patient's informed consent wherever possible.
- Involuntary treatment is only permitted when a person poses an immediate danger to themselves or others, and must be authorized by qualified medical professionals.
- Patients in mental health facilities have the right to humane treatment, privacy, and communication with family.
- The Mental Health Helpline (16000) provides confidential support.
- Qatar's National Mental Health Strategy aims to integrate mental health into primary care and reduce stigma.
When does it apply?
- You or a family member needs mental health treatment in Qatar.
- A person is involuntarily committed to a mental health facility.
- You are denied mental health services or treated inhumanely.
What should you do?
- Contact the Mental Health Helpline at 16000 for confidential support and referrals.
- Visit a primary healthcare center for initial mental health assessment.
- If a family member is involuntarily committed, request to see the authorization documents and consult a lawyer.
- Report any mistreatment in mental health facilities to the Ministry of Public Health.
What should you NOT do?
- Do not ignore mental health concerns. Help is available and confidential.
- Do not allow involuntary commitment without proper medical authorization and legal safeguards.
- Do not stigmatize mental illness. It is a medical condition that deserves proper treatment.
