Understanding Denmark's Legal System
Denmark is a unitary constitutional monarchy with a civil-law system. The Folketinget passes all laws — key statutes include the Criminal Code (Straffeloven), Administration of Justice Act (Retsplejeloven), and Contracts Act (Aftaleloven). The Parliamentary Ombudsman investigates complaints about public authorities and can demand changes when the state acts unfairly.
The "Danish Model" sets most workplace conditions through collective agreements between unions and employer associations rather than statute — so your specific terms often live in your overenskomst, not in a generic law. EU law applies (GDPR, consumer protection); Greenland and the Faroe Islands have separate self-governance.
