Understanding Iceland's Legal System
Iceland is a parliamentary republic with a Nordic civil-law system. The Althingi passes all laws — key statutes you'll meet include the General Penal Code, the Rent Act, the Working Environment Act, the Income Tax Act, and the Act on Equal Status. Most workers belong to a union, and your specific wages and conditions usually live in a collective agreement, not a single statute.
Iceland isn't in the EU but is in the EEA — so EU single-market rules apply: worker mobility, GDPR, consumer protection, competition. Schengen rules cover travel and borders. For employment disputes, go through your union first, then the District Court or an arbitration panel under your collective agreement.
