Omani National Law

What is this right?

Omani citizenship is extremely rare for foreigners and is granted exclusively by Royal Decree. The nationality law does provide a framework, but approvals are exceedingly uncommon:

  • By birth (patrilineal): A child born to an Omani father is automatically a citizen. Children of Omani mothers and foreign fathers are not automatically citizens, though they may apply after reaching adulthood.
  • By marriage: A foreign woman married to an Omani man may apply for citizenship after a waiting period (typically 10-15 years of marriage). The marriage must be ongoing and approved. Foreign husbands of Omani women have no pathway to citizenship through marriage.
  • Naturalization (Arab nationals): Arab nationals who have resided in Oman for 10 consecutive years may apply. Requirements include Arabic proficiency, lawful income, good conduct, and no criminal record.
  • Naturalization (non-Arabs): Non-Arab nationals who have resided in Oman for 20 consecutive years may apply. The same additional requirements apply. Approvals are extremely rare.
  • Exceptional naturalization: Individuals who have rendered outstanding service to Oman may be naturalized by Royal Decree without meeting the standard residence requirement.
  • Dual nationality: Oman does not allow dual nationality. Naturalized citizens must renounce their original nationality. Omanis who acquire foreign nationality lose their Omani citizenship.

Realistic expectation: For the vast majority of foreign residents, Omani citizenship is not achievable. The Investor Residency (5-10 years) is the practical long-term alternative.

When does it apply?

  • You are the child of an Omani father (automatic citizenship).
  • You are a foreign woman married to an Omani man for 10-15+ years.
  • You are an Arab national with 10+ years of continuous residence (or 20+ for non-Arabs).

What to Do If You Have Met the Residence Requirements and Want to Apply for Omani Citizenship

  • For children of Omani fathers: Citizenship is automatic — ensure birth registration with the civil registry.
  • For marriage-based applications: Apply through the ROP with your marriage contract, husband's national documents, and supporting proof of continuous marriage.
  • For naturalization: Apply through the ROP with documentation proving continuous residence, Arabic proficiency, income, and clean criminal record.
  • Consider Investor Residency as the practical long-term alternative.

What should you NOT do?

  • Do not expect citizenship through residence alone — meeting the time requirement does not guarantee approval.
  • Do not pay anyone claiming to arrange citizenship — it is by Royal Decree only.
  • Do not hold dual nationality if granted Omani citizenship — it will result in loss of Omani nationality.
