Unfair Commercial Practices
Written in plain language for general understanding. This is educational content, not legal advice. Based on Icelandic Acts of the Althingi, statutory instruments, and official guidance.
Icelandic National Law
What is this right?
Icelandic law prohibits businesses from using unfair or misleading practices:
- Unfair practices are prohibited before, during, and after any transaction in goods or services.
- Advertising must be substantiated, clear, truthful, and not misleading.
- Businesses cannot provide false information intended to influence consumer purchasing decisions.
- Fines: Up to ISK 10 million for violations.
The Consumer Agency (Neytendastofa) actively monitors advertising practices and can initiate enforcement actions.
When does it apply?
- You believe a business has used misleading advertising, false claims, or deceptive pricing.
- You were influenced to make a purchase based on incorrect or exaggerated information.
What should you do?
- Report the practice to the Consumer Agency (Neytendastofa).
- Keep evidence — save advertisements, screenshots, receipts, and correspondence.
- If you suffered financial loss, you may also pursue a civil claim through the courts.
What should you NOT do?
- Don't assume "it's just advertising" — misleading claims are unlawful and enforceable.
- Don't delete evidence — screenshots and records are essential for complaints.
