Icelandic National Law

What is this right?

Icelandic law prohibits businesses from using unfair or misleading practices:

  • Unfair practices are prohibited before, during, and after any transaction in goods or services.
  • Advertising must be substantiated, clear, truthful, and not misleading.
  • Businesses cannot provide false information intended to influence consumer purchasing decisions.
  • Fines: Up to ISK 10 million for violations.

The Consumer Agency (Neytendastofa) actively monitors advertising practices and can initiate enforcement actions.

When does it apply?

  • You believe a business has used misleading advertising, false claims, or deceptive pricing.
  • You were influenced to make a purchase based on incorrect or exaggerated information.

What should you do?

  • Report the practice to the Consumer Agency (Neytendastofa).
  • Keep evidence — save advertisements, screenshots, receipts, and correspondence.
  • If you suffered financial loss, you may also pursue a civil claim through the courts.

What should you NOT do?

  • Don't assume "it's just advertising" — misleading claims are unlawful and enforceable.
  • Don't delete evidence — screenshots and records are essential for complaints.
