Icelandic National Law

What is this right?

EEA/EFTA and Nordic citizens enjoy special rights in Iceland:

Nordic citizens (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden):

  • No work permit or residence permit required.
  • Must report change of address within 1 week of arrival at Registers Iceland or local municipality office.
  • No passport required for travel between Nordic countries.

Other EEA/EFTA citizens:

  • No work permit required.
  • May reside and work for up to 3 months without registration.
  • Must register with Registers Iceland if staying longer than 3 months (processed within 10 working days).
  • Permanent residence: After 5 continuous years of legal residence.

Family members of EEA/EFTA citizens can apply for a residence card regardless of their own nationality.

When does it apply?

  • You are a citizen of an EEA, EFTA, or Nordic country moving to or visiting Iceland.

What should you do?

  • Nordic citizens: Report your address within 1 week at Registers Iceland.
  • Other EEA/EFTA citizens: Register with Registers Iceland if staying longer than 3 months.
  • Registration provides a legal domicile and Icelandic ID number (kennitala).

What should you NOT do?

  • Don't skip registration — it is required for accessing social services, banking, and other essential services.

You came here to know your rights — help someone else know theirs.
